What is deBridge?

deBridge is a secure interoperability layer for Web3 that enables decentralized transfers of arbitrary messages and value between different blockchains. Often referred to as the "internet of liquidity" for decentralized finance (DeFi), deBridge aims to solve the ongoing challenges of transferring assets, information, and data between blockchains. The protocol was conceived during the Chainlink Global Hackathon in April 2021, where it won the Grand Prize, showcasing its potential to become a single decentralized standard for bridging assets and enhancing cross-chain interoperability.

deBridge is an infrastructure and framework designed to facilitate not only the decentralized transfer of data and assets but also the interoperability and composability of smart contracts across different ecosystems. Through deBridge, projects can integrate with cross-chain opportunities, build custom bridges, enable protocol scalability, and achieve composability with protocols across various blockchain ecosystems. The system is secured by a network of independent validators, elected by deBridge governance, who are responsible for validating cross-chain transactions.

How Does deBridge Work?

At its core, deBridge utilizes a locking and minting approach to facilitate cross-chain transfers. Native tokens are locked or unlocked within deBridge smart contracts on the native chain, while wrapped assets (called deAssets) are minted or burned on secondary chains. These deAssets maintain a 1:1 backing by the collateral in the original chain, ensuring security and transparency in every transaction. The deBridge protocol also allows the transfer of arbitrary data or messages, which are executed on the target blockchain by designated keepers, all while ensuring the security of the network through validator confirmations.

Cross-chain transactions are validated by a decentralized oracle network (DON), consisting of independent validators operating Chainlink oracle nodes. This setup guarantees that transactions are only executed if they meet the required confirmations, providing robustness against malicious actors. To further ensure security, delegated staking and slashing mechanics are employed, which disincentivize validators from colluding and provide a strong economic backing for protocol safety.

Blockchain Agnosticism: deBridge can facilitate interoperability and liquidity transfers between any blockchain or smart contract. Adding new chains is a seamless process that does not disrupt current operations.

Universal Hooking Service: deBridge acts as a hooking service that allows protocols to scale and interconnect across different blockchains, including Layer 1 (L1), Layer 2 (L2), and sidechains.

Fast and Decentralized Transactions: Validator consensus is achieved at the smart contract level, ensuring fast and asynchronous execution of cross-chain transactions. The protocol's slashing and staking mechanisms ensure that validators are financially accountable for delays or errors, thereby reducing risks for users.

deBridge supports a unified standard for cross-chain transfers, allowing users to specify the origin and destination chains through a single user interface, without the need to find different bridges for each blockchain. Developers can utilize deBridge's infrastructure to build new cross-chain applications, including swaps, NFT bridges, and more, all while leveraging the high throughput and security guarantees offered by the protocol.

deBridge's Founding Team

deBridge was co-founded by Alex Smirnov, who serves as the Project Lead. Alex holds a Master’s degree in Mechanics and Mathematics from Moscow State University and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. His academic background, combined with a deep understanding of blockchain technology, has positioned him as a leading force behind deBridge's innovation and vision.

Another key team member is Jonnie Emsley, the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of deBridge. Jonnie previously worked at MoonPay, bringing extensive experience in marketing and communications within the crypto industry. He graduated from Victoria University of Wellington, and his expertise has been instrumental in expanding deBridge's presence within the DeFi and Web3 ecosystems.

Gal Stern, Head of Business Development at deBridge, has been pivotal in building partnerships and driving growth. With prior experience as Head of Community and Marketing at xBacked DAO and a Business Development Manager at GDA Capital, Gal brings a wealth of experience in community engagement and ecosystem expansion. He holds degrees from the University of New South Wales in Sydney and the College of Charleston, enabling him to leverage both business acumen and industry knowledge to advance deBridge's strategic goals.

Together, the founding team has built deBridge into a powerful cross-chain interoperability protocol, aiming to enhance the composability of decentralized applications and become the standard for transferring assets, data, and smart contract functionality across multiple blockchain ecosystems.
